Trunk Talks — Erich Meier, Winemaking with Character

Above Lake Zurich, where the morning mist lifts to reveal sun-drenched vineyards, Erich Meier quietly and steadily perfects his craft. A pioneer in viticulture, deeply rooted in tradition, he has been dedicated for years to producing wines that speak of origin, patience, and precision. We visited him at his winery in Uetikon am See, where he gave us a tour and talked about his approach to winemaking, sustainability, and the artistry behind every bottle.

In preparation of our upcoming wine tasting & shopping event at Trunk Zurich on May 16, we sat down with Erich to talk about his philosophy, his process, and the stories behind the wines you'll be able to taste.

Erich at his winery in Uetikon am See

How did your journey into the world of winemaking begin?

It began with a deep connection to nature. My family has lived here since 1793, and I grew up surrounded by vineyards. I first trained as a carpenter because I was also fascinated by working with wood. Becoming a winemaker was then a natural path for me. But beyond tradition, I was also drawn by the challenge - every year brings new conditions, new puzzles to solve, and new opportunities to refine the craft.

Your winery in Uetikon am See covers 6.8 hectares. What makes this place so special for viticulture?

The microclimate here is truly unique. We benefit from the Glarus Föhn wind, which quickly dries the grapes after rainfall, and the lake helps balance temperatures. The soil is rich and diverse - which allows us to grow ten different grape varieties. All these elements combined create wines with depth and complexity.

Sustainability plays a key role in your work. How does it shape your winemaking philosophy?

For me, sustainability is not a buzzword, it’s a necessity. We do as much work as possible by hand to ensure our vines stay healthy and productive for decades. In both the vineyard and the cellar, we avoid unnecessary interventions – we let nature take the lead. The goal is to create wines that reflect their origin as purely as possible.

You work with both white and red grape varieties. Do you have a favorite to work with?

I love the precision that Räuschling requires – it demands great attention and patience, but rewards you in kind. At the same time, I’m fascinated by Pinot Noir because it expresses the terroir so vividly. Every vineyard and vintage tells a different story – it never gets boring.

Your wines are often described as honest and precise. What defines your style?

Balance. Whether it's acidity, structure, or aroma – everything has to be in harmony. I also believe in respecting the grapes – we only intervene when necessary and allow each wine the space to develop its own character. Innovation plays a role, but tradition and intuition are just as important.

What do you hope people experience when they open a bottle of your wine?

I want people to taste the craftsmanship and dedication behind each bottle. My wines are made for those who appreciate nuance – who enjoy discovering aromas and understanding the story behind the wine. Great wine is like great style: it lives in the balance between origin and modernity.

'Great wine is like great style: it lives in the balance between origin and modernity.'

What motivates you year after year?

The pursuit of excellence. Every harvest brings new challenges, and I love constantly improving the process. My goal remains the same: to create wines that inspire discerning drinkers and reflect the essence of this special region in every bottle.

What do you think sets your winery apart from others in the region?

I believe I’ve found my signature and my balance - that’s what allows me to create wines like these.

What are you currently working on?

Budburst is underway, the young shoots are beginning to grow. Vegetation is starting, which means our intense season of vineyard work by hand is beginning too.

Which wine from the 2024 vintage are you currently most excited about – and why?

The Räuschling Schönfels, a single vineyard wine. Vines are 59 years old, low yield, vinified 100% in clay amphorae. A fantastic wine with lots of character and texture.

Which wines will we be tasting at the upcoming Trunk Degustation?

Sparkling Wine Brut, Räuschling, Sauvignon Blanc, Pinot Gris and Pinot Noir Schwändi

How would you describe your personal style – and what do you like about Trunk?

Trunk fits my style perfectly – I gravitate toward clothes that make you feel instantly at ease, and Trunk offers that in abundance.

Thank you, Erich!
