Born in 1966, Chida developed a deep interest in fashion during Japan’s designer brand boom of the 1980s, which led him to move to Tokyo to study at fashion school. After graduating, he refined his skills at a traditional tailoring company, where he gained a strong foundation in garment construction. Building on this experience, he went on to establish Sage de Cret in 2001.

Can you give us some background on the brand and how it all began?

The brand name, Sage de Crêt, is a coined term combining the French words SAGE (meaning ‘wise’) and DÉCRET (meaning ‘order’). The brand was launched in 2001, born from a desire to support the wardrobes of men who have their own sense of style and dress in a way that reflects their individuality.

How would you describe the philosophy behind Sage de Crêt? Is there a particular cultural or personal influence that guides the brand and its collections?

Sage de Crêt offers refined designs inspired by military, workwear, and traditional styles, with a strong emphasis on fabric dyeing, materials, and intricate detailing. The brand’s core concept is ‘Comfort, Robustness, and Relaxation’—creating clothing that is both stylish and effortless for everyday wear.

The collections feel cohesive in a minimalist way, with a strong emphasis on fabric choices. How would you characterise that approach?

Our garments are designed with meticulous attention to detail, from the stitching and individual components to the silhouette and finishing process. While honouring the historical significance and traditions of clothing, our designs are never overly rigid or predetermined. Instead, we allow expert craftsmanship and refined techniques to speak for themselves.

For our first collection, we’ve chosen your take on the M-65 jacket—an iconic piece. Can you tell us about your approach to reinterpreting such a classic? The fabric seems to be what sets it apart and gives it a unique twist.

Our M-65 is a faithful reproduction of the original but reworked with a modern sensibility. We have preserved the essential elements while eliminating details that no longer serve a purpose, ensuring a deep understanding of the jacket’s structure and historical significance. The fabric is linen, which adds a contemporary edge with its structured feel and subtle sheen. At the same time, the overall construction remains true to the original, maintaining a high standard of quality.

What do you want your customers to take away from their experience with Sage de Crêt, both through the product and the brand itself?

I believe there is a universal understanding of what truly makes for great everyday wear. Sage de Crêt pieces are always ‘relaxed yet refined, casual yet sophisticated’—classic designs infused with just a touch of contemporary trend. Above all, I have complete confidence in the comfort of our clothing. Nothing would make me happier than for people to try our garments and become lifelong fans of Sage de Crêt.
