Linen has come to the fore as a key wardrobe textile in recent seasons. Heralded for its easy breathability, natural tactility and timelessness, it’s been taken out of the vacation realm and afforded a new year-round approachability. And, thanks to the fact it’s not a water-intensive crop, the fabric comes with its own sustainable credentials.
But as with everything in life, not all linens are created equal, and Baird McNutt’s Irish linen is unparalleled. Nestled between the postcard-perfect villages of Kells and Connor in Northern Ireland — the industrial home to the then-flourishing fabric-making mills, which lined the Kellswater river of Antrim — Baird McNutt’s history is as evocative as it is enduring.

Established in 1912 by the Baird family, its original factory boasted some 400 Atherton looms, which were renowned for producing premium quality cloth; over the years, the Baird family bolstered their influence and technical know-how, acquiring a renowned dyeing and finishing mill in 1991. Later, they joined forces with the McNutt family of Donegal, who brought with them fabric design expertise. Baird McNutt, as it is now known, is a global leader in Irish linen.
Steeped in history and tradition, rest assured the mill’s sights are set firmly on the future. Today, the zero-emissions facility is fully powered by green energy, it has eliminated chemicals from its fabric-making process and cut down on its water consumption. And any water it does use is carefully treated and recycled. Modernisation is key.
This eco agenda lends itself to the fabrics, too — which is why opting for Baird McNutt’s Irish linen for Trunk’s new George shirt collection was a no-brainer. The fabrics feature a super soft handle, drape and durability, which is down to the purity of the waters used during the production phase; not only does it feel soft against the skin, but it also reduces creasing, making it ideal both for days spent on-the-go or for packing into a weekend bag.
The quality of the cloth also means it ages better — essential when our shirts, like all our Trunk-brand garments, are created with longevity in mind. Designed in-house and made in Portugal, our new George shirt is the ultimate smart-casual staple. Utilising a lightweight colour palette that’s ideal for the summer season, with an easy fit and patch pocket detail, it’s sure to be an ally through the warmer months.
